BIA Metric Interpretation

  • Global measurement note
    • What BIA actually measures: the device applies a small alternating current and measures electrical impedance. Most other body-composition values are model-derived estimates, not direct measurements.
    • Why estimates can shift: impedance changes with hydration and fluid distribution, recent food or drink, exercise, alcohol, posture, time of day, skin/electrode contact, and device/model differences.
    • Reference range:
      • Values shown in brackets, such as (10.1 ~ 30.2), normally indicate the reference range for that metric.
      • The reference range may vary depending on factors such as the user's age, height, sex, weight, or other profile information.
    • Relationship between metrics:
      • Body-composition metrics are model-derived estimates based on bioelectrical impedance measurements.
      • The displayed numbers should not be assumed to follow an exact subtraction or addition formula. Because each metric is estimated from the measurement model and related individual body compartments, rather than calculated directly from another displayed value.
    • Numerical discrepancies: A discrepancy might come from the estimation model, but a sufficiently abnormal result could also reflect poor contact, measurement conditions, input errors, or electromagnetic interference (EMI).

Body composition diagram

  • Extracellular water (ECW), L

    • Meaning: estimated water outside cells, mainly blood plasma and interstitial fluid.
    • Measurement note: an isolated high or low ECW estimate does not diagnose edema, dehydration, or another fluid disorder. Fluid shifts can substantially affect BIA estimates.
  • Intracellular water (ICW), L

    • Meaning: estimated water inside cells.
    • Measurement note: ICW is inferred from multi-frequency impedance models; it is not a direct measurement of cell mass or cellular health.
  • Body water / total body water (TBW), L

    • Meaning: estimated total water in the body. Physiologically, total body water consists of intracellular water and extracellular water.
    • Interpretation: strongly related to fat-free tissue because lean tissues contain much more water than adipose tissue.
    • Measurement note: recent drinking, sweating, exercise, meals, illness, and abnormal fluid retention can change the estimate without corresponding changes in muscle or fat.
    • Note: TBW, ECW, ICW. The displayed numbers should not be assumed to follow an exact subtraction or addition formula.
  • Protein, kg

    • Meaning: device-estimated protein-containing component of fat-free soft tissue.
  • Minerals, kg

    • Meaning: estimated total mineral content of the body, including minerals associated with bone and minerals present in soft tissues and body fluids.
  • Soft lean mass (SLM), kg

    • Meaning: estimated non-fat soft-tissue mass, generally excluding bone mineral.
    • Interpretation: includes skeletal muscle together with organs, connective tissue, and other non-fat soft tissues. These tissues also contain substantial body water.
    • Note: SLM is broader than skeletal muscle mass. SLM is not the same as SMM and should not be interpreted as muscle mass alone.
    • Measurement note: exact definitions may vary by body-composition model.
  • Fat-free mass (FFM), kg

    • Meaning: estimated total body mass excluding fat mass.
    • Interpretation: includes all non-fat tissues and body constituents, including soft lean tissue and mineral-containing tissues.
    • Note: FFM is broader than both SLM and skeletal muscle mass. FFM is not the same as muscle mass.
    • Measurement note: FFM estimation depends strongly on assumptions about hydration. Fluid gain can increase estimated FFM without true muscle gain.
  • Fat mass (FM), kg

    • Meaning: estimated absolute mass of body fat.
    • Measurement note: derived from a body-composition model rather than directly weighed adipose tissue; hydration-related errors in FFM can propagate into fat-mass estimates.
  • Weight, kg

    • Meaning: total body mass measured by the scale at that moment.
    • Interpretation: includes fat, lean tissue, water, bone, gastrointestinal contents, and other body mass.

Body fat analysis

  • Skeletal muscle mass (SMM), kg

    • Meaning: estimated mass of skeletal muscle, the muscles attached to bones that produce voluntary movement.
    • Interpretation: SMM represents the skeletal-muscle component of the body. It does not include cardiac muscle, smooth muscle, organs, bone, or fat.
    • Measurement note: BIA estimates SMM from impedance and body-composition models; it does not directly measure muscle volume, muscle strength, or muscle function.
    • Difference
      • Medicine defines muscle tissue as skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle, and smooth muscle.
      • There is no practical routine whole-body measurement that separately measures and adds together all three types of muscle in a living person.
      • Body-composition assessment therefore focuses on skeletal muscle mass (SMM), which represents the major muscle tissue responsible for movement and posture.
      • BIA cannot directly identify skeletal muscle tissue. It measures electrical impedance and uses a body-composition model to estimate SMM.
      • SLM is different: it represents broader non-fat soft tissue and includes skeletal muscle together with organs, body fluids, connective tissue, and other soft tissues.
  • Body mass index (BMI), kg/m²

    • Meaning: BMI = weight / height².
  • Body fat percentage (PBF), %

    • Meaning: estimated fraction of body weight that is fat: fat mass / body weight × 100.
    • Measurement note: BIA-derived PBF can differ materially from reference methods in an individual. Hydration, exercise, food/fluid intake, body shape, population, and device algorithm affect the estimate.

Segmental analysis

  • Segmental muscle / lean mass, kg

    • Meaning: estimated lean or muscle-associated mass for the torso, arms, and legs using segment-specific impedance.
    • Measurement note: it is not a direct MRI/CT measurement of regional muscle volume. Limb position, contact quality, geometry, hydration, and fluid redistribution can alter results.
  • Segmental fat mass, kg

    • Meaning: estimated fat assigned to each body segment.

General assessment

  • General score

    • Interpretation: a summary of the manufacturer's scoring algorithm.
  • Age

    • Meaning: chronological age.
  • Biological age

    • Measurement note: Biological age measures how well your cells, tissues, and organs function compared to your actual calendar (chronological) age.

Comprehensive assessment

  • Basal metabolic rate (BMR), kcal/day

    • Meaning: estimated energy expenditure required to maintain basic physiological functions under basal resting conditions.
  • Bone mineral content (BMC), kg

    • Meaning: estimated mass of mineral associated with bone.
    • Composition: bone mineral consists mainly of calcium-phosphate mineral, primarily hydroxyapatite, with smaller amounts of carbonate and other minerals.
    • Measurement note: BMC describes mineral mass, not bone strength or bone mineral density.
  • Non-osseous mineral

    • Meaning: mineral content located outside bone, mainly minerals dissolved in body fluids or present in soft tissues.
    • Examples: sodium, potassium, chloride, magnesium, phosphorus, and other electrolytes and trace minerals.
    • Note: osseous means relating to bone; non-osseous therefore refers to mineral outside bone.
    • Note: Total Minerals, BMC, Non-osseous mineral. The displayed numbers should not be assumed to follow an exact subtraction or addition formula.
  • Waist–hip ratio (WHR)

    • Meaning: conventionally, waist circumference / hip circumference.
    • Interpretation: higher central relative to hip circumference is associated at a population level with higher cardiometabolic risk.
    • Measurement note: a BIA device may be estimating WHR.
  • Visceral fat index (VFI)

    • Meaning: manufacturer-defined index intended to represent visceral or central abdominal fat.
    • Measurement note: standard BIA does not directly image visceral adipose tissue. The index is algorithm-derived and its units, scale, and cutoffs are manufacturer-specific.

Bioelectrical impedance

  • Impedance, Ω

    • Meaning: electrical opposition measured while a low-level alternating current passes through a body segment. This is the core electrical measurement underlying BIA.
    • Interpretation: conductive, water-rich tissues generally permit current more readily than poorly conductive tissues, but the raw value also depends strongly on body geometry and current path.
  • Frequency, kHz

    • Meaning: frequency of the alternating current used for the impedance measurement.
    • Interpretation: different frequencies interact differently with cell membranes and body-fluid compartments; multi-frequency measurements provide additional information for models estimating ECW, ICW, and TBW.
  • Segment-specific impedance: right arm, left arm, torso, right leg, left leg

    • Meaning: electrical impedance measured along device-defined current paths for individual body segments.
    • Measurement note: values are affected by segment length/cross-sectional area, posture, electrode contact, skin conditions, and fluid distribution. Do not compare absolute values between different segments as if they shared the same expected range.
